Cosmetology I

Required Materials
Students will be responsible for the following expenses: cost of uniform, student permit, cosmetology kit and supplies, approximately $400.00. Students will also be responsible to pay the Skills USA membership fees of $16.00 per year. Milady’s Standard Textbook of Cosmetology TDLR Rules and Regulations book 
Catalog Description

Cosmetology is a two-year program. Students receive instruction in the development of manipulative skills, such as manicure and pedicure techniques, haircutting, hairstyling, permanent waving, hair straightening, facial treatments and make-up application. Services for patrons are performed by students under the supervision of licensed instructors. During the course of study, students also become knowledgeable about the technical aspects of cosmetology such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and electricity and related safety practices. Students are encouraged to participate in SkillsUSA-TEXAS which offers the opportunity to compete with other students, as well as promoting leadership skills. 
Rationale: Upon successful completion, students will hold a Texas Cosmetology License and be eligible for employment in the Cosmetology Industry. 
IV. Learning Outcomes: Students are taught the basics skills and theory needed to follow into their second year.

V. Assessment: 50 % of class work assignments are implemented for the theory portion, including tests and quizzes to continuously improve student understanding and mastery of course material. 50 % Hands on training are practiced in the lab to allow effectiveness of their skills being taught, with the guidance of their instructor.

VI. Capstone Project Students will be given an end of year project. Projects will vary.

VII. All course requirements This is a rigorous course that requires students to obtain additional after school hours. Upon completion of the required 1000 clocked hours, students are eligible to take the written and practical portions of the Cosmetology State Board Exam in their second year.

Hairstyling- finger waving, state board demo, blow drying, thermal curling,

Nail Structure and Growth
Nail Diseases and Disorders
Manicuring and Pedicures
Hair coloring and Highlighting
Students should have 450 hours at the end of 1st year cosmetology
IX. Evaluation strategies/ grading criteria-
Class work 15%
Lab/ Quizzes 35%.
Exams 40%
Participation 10%.

Students are required to make up work on excused absences within 3 school days.

X. Certification and Licenses – Upon completion of the required 900 clocked hours, students are expected to take the written portion of the Cosmetology State Board Exam. The cost for this exam is $52.00. Students are expected to take the second portion of their exam at 1000 hours and when all practical requirements have been completed and have successfully passed the written portion of the state exam. The cost for this exam is $74.00. Upon successful completion, students will hold a Texas Cosmetology License and be eligible for employment in the Cosmetology Industry.

Students will be responsible for the following expenses: Replace any items missing from cosmetology kit. Students will also be responsible to pay the Skills USA membership fees of $16.00 per year. Cost of Exams $52.00 written and $74.00

V. Assessment: Students will test on Cosmetology Tutor in preparing for State Exam. Activities allow for systematic measurement of the effectiveness of different teaching techniques and tools in helping students grasp key concepts, skills, and/or information in a given course. Instructors use data from assessment activities to modify how the course is taught to continuously improve student understanding and mastery of course material. Therefore, students should give their best effort to their role in assessment.
